Garia-Tollygunge stretch has emerged as one of the busiest retail destinations in Kolkata

Kolkata virtually ended at Prince Anwar Shah Road 30 years ago. Then something happened. The Metro connected the rest of Kolkata with Tollygunge. In 2009, the metro line was extended with addition of four stations i.e. Kudghat, Bansdroni, Naktala and Garia Bazaar. This proved to be turning point. People buy homes wherever the Metro extends. More consumption means more stores. More stores means economic activities and traffic. Apart from Metro expansion, the principal factor driving the retail revolution has been the affordable rents of stores along the stretch. Compared to store space in Gariahat, the retail rent on Garia-Tollygunge is considerably lower. When retailers pay less, they can pass on the benefit to the consumers. This stretch has become a key market for every range of product starting from apparel, cosmetics, accessories, furniture to coffee shops, service stores to hangouts. Brands like Titan, Adidas, Bata, Senco Jewellers, LG, Jharkrafts, Sreeleathers, Spencer’s, Domino’s, Arambagh, Nokia, Gupta Brothers and Café Coffee Day dominate the stretch.
